about

Brothers and Sisters,

Today marks the first full week of releases for this benefit, and that’s pretty cool. Today and tomorrow’s singles are actually part one and two of a set.

Since September, I’ve been working on a masters in interdisciplinary arts over at Columbia. It’s a pretty small department, and I only have about a dozen classmates that I see with any regularity. They’re all experienced artists in varying fields, but if one thing is certain, they’re also ferocious learners. We’ve all found some new talents that we may not have known we had, and it’s regularly inspiring.

In orchestrating this project, I often have to scale the scope of each release so as not to overwhelm. And so, for today and tomorrow, we’re going to focus on one really great class day. My comrades in school were supremely supportive of participating in this project, and I’m excited to showcase a small fraction of the great work that’s been made.

“Soul Sway” by Martinez E-B b/w “A Date with Your Family” by Michelle Richardella were the first two of four pieces presented for our final compositions in Jeff Abell’s Sound class. There were another awesome batch of compositions by our classmates we heard the following day, but for whatever reason, today and tomorrow’s songs just locked together. They are being presented in the order that we heard them.

“Soul Sway” is a wild intergalactic voyage that you kind of have to experience to understand. Martinez E-B is a staggering talent, a Renaissance Man and my general partner in hijinx at Columbia. He hand-painted his score for his portion of the artwork, and even pranked me by sampling the studio version of “Bereavement Notice in Comic Sans” and didn’t tell me until I heard it in class. Salut! Artist, Educator, and Art Educator Michelle Richardella follows up with a loving and raucous tribute to her family that avoids sentimentality by capturing them as they are now. It’s hilarious and heartwarming.

I’m thrilled they were simpatico to releasing these today. Salut.

Sincerely,
Faiz Razi
