about

Brothers and Sisters,

Today is the first National Epilepsy Day. I had no idea! Found out about it on the Foundation’s site the other day. cold check it. So, we’ve planned something special. Also! we went from $80 last night to $140 this morning. Cheers, all! For those that aren’t really familiar with bandcamp yet, for any of the free singles, you can pay whatever amount you’d like. A buck, five bucks, whatever’s comfortable. Some kind souls each dropped fifty on a couple songs. A hat tip to all of you! I’ll probably save the next tally for later in the week, but for now a hearty Salut!

A few years back, Jimmy’s sister-in-law, Amanda Kneese wrote an awesome letter to Jimmy regarding the benefits of yoga and stretching for epileptics. It makes a ton of sense, and provides a lot of practical advice for sufferers. She has graciously sent it along, along with Jimmy’s response.

Jimmy’s response..

Well, it’s sweet at first. He was a gifted writer to say the least. Often times, when a gifted writer goes they publish his letters, and this is one of many. Jimmy’s thoughts on yoga and epilepsy are lucid and ring true. It’s great. What follows in the post script, however, is one of the most well executed string of profane insults I have read. I swear he had epilepsy, not tourette’s, but sometimes he’d fool you. Enjoy!

So it’s a long read today, but it’s worth it. Let’s learn some, laugh some and crank a bracing bit of soul from today’s featured artist, Wheatstrong.
See you below!

Hey Jimmy,  as you may know I am taking another yoga training course right now to further my practice and teaching skills. Part of our homework for this week was to look into how yoga helps the lymphatic system. I won't go into too much detail, but I am continually amazed at how this simple physical practice can help the body in so many ways, both internally and externally, mentally and physically. Anyway I digress..in doing some research on this subject I started thinking of you..

I first came across this part in the article about the effectiveness of shoulderstand and thought of you instantly as it reads, "The change in gravitational pull on the body also affects the abdominal organs so that the bowels move freely and constipation is relieved." Ha ha, all joking aside, the next few lines went on to say.. "It also helps to relieve epilepsy, low vitality and anemia." So I started looking into what might be out there about how yoga can possibly help to prevent and/or at least help deal with seizures. This came up.. "Epileptologist Dr. Nandan Yardi speaks of yoga when writing about seizure disorders. He points out that seizures, like physical diseases, result when there are imbalances in the various physical and psychological systems (unions) of the body. Yoga is one of the oldest formal practices known whose purpose is to restore this balance."

Most everything I came across suggested meditation practices and the over all benefits of practicing yoga in slowing down your nervous system and helping those who have had seizures in their every day lives. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot published about it yet, but I thought it was really interesting and it just reaffirmed my belief in the fact that everyone should practice yoga!

Sorry if I am sounding preachy. But I know that you do practice yoga to some degree and I just thought you might find some of this interesting at the very least. If anything, maybe continuing to practice yoga will help with the seizures some day.  I know that you are a very wise old man so this may be last years news to you, but I am just coming across this myself as I learn more, and thought I'd share ; ). And, next time you are feeling constipated, get your ass up over your head and into shoulderstand!  Maybe next time I see you we can really work on that pose! Hope all is well in your world.

love ya buddy, Amanda

Amanda,

While I am often cynical about "new age" (I realize that's a somewhat pejorative and inaccurate label, let's say "alternative") medicine, I believe in many of the espoused health benefits of yoga.  And, knowing nothing about the physiology behind it, it makes intuitive sense to me that yoga could help us movers and shakers (emphasis on the "shaking" part).  While neurologists agree about very little regarding the causes of and cures for epilepsy, they all seem to agree that stress is a primary catalyst for a spontaneous trip to Seizure Country.  Even if you're a person who doesn't buy into anything besides Western medicine's scalpel-and-Prozac cure-all, you'd be hard-pressed to make the argument that yoga doesn't- at the very least- reduce stress.  To argue otherwise is tantamount to telling the world that you're a giant boner.
 ...
Amanda, I am truly touched that you dug deep into this subject for little old me.  It means more than you know.  I very often think about how lucky I am to have such a wonderful person become part of my family.

..and with that, I proud to introduce the man Amanda calls a husband, Jimmy’s brother, Mr. Patrick Kneese.

Patrick and Ben Birkey have been making music as Wheatstrong (sometimes with the prefix of ‘Petey’) for ages. Today’s single, “Breathin’” b/w “Anticipation” is an excellent way to kick off the week. “Breathin’” is the song Beth and I requested for today’s release. It’s four minutes of music that makes us dance, and could probably be stretched to another ten without us noticing. Love it. I tend to play it a few times in a row whenever it comes up. The b-side, “Anticipation” is a new one Patrick and Ben wrote for Jimmy. It’s lovely. As the song goes, “I hope Heaven has a sense of humor.” Cheers, Jimmy.

Sincerely,
Faiz Razi
